Wrocław airport - how to get around

I suppose that for many of you the first place youa re going to see in Wrocław will be the airport.
So I collected some useful information (more detialed than on airport's offcial website) in this post.

1. Connection with the city centre

A big advantage of Wrocław airport is that it's not just called 'Wrocław airport', it's truly in Wrocław. As a result, it takes only about 20-25 minutes by car to get to the city centre.

How to get there?

Bus 406

This bus goes to the city centre. You get on at Port Lotniczy bus stop. The ride to the Rynek area takes about 25 minutes. The bus doesn't operate during the night (midnight-early morning hours). Check the timetable here.

The bus ends at Dworcowa stop. If you continue your travel by train or coach get off here, as it's in front of the main railway station, and near the long-distance bus station.

If you are staying somewhere in Stare Miasto (the Old Town), you can get off at either Plac Orląt Lwowskich, or Renoma, or Dworcowa, depending on exact location.
If you are not quite sure where in the city centre your hostel is, I advise getting off at Renoma. It's 10 minutes' walk to Rynek in a straight line; you can change there for trams going to the north part of the Old town situated by the river.

If you stay in a district outisde of city centre, and you haven't checked the route before, go to Dworcowa, as there is a big bus/tram stop Dworzec PKP, from where you can travel in all directions.

Bus 406 is not an airport shuttle type of bus. Good news: there is no special fee added to the ticket price just for getting to the airport (like e.g. in  Madrid). Bad news: it will stop a dozen times before you get to the city centre.

If you don't change the bus, you buy "bilet jednorazowy" (single ticket) for 3 PLN. If you are going to change, a ticket valid for 60 minutes (bilet czasowy)  for 4,40 PLN makes more sense.

Bus 249

During the night you can reach the airport from the city centre by this bus. But be careful! Not every single one. It goes different routes, only some of them include Port Lotniczy bus stop. What is more, it doesn't go the other way round. So it's kinda tricky, and if you decide to take bus 249, check the timetable carefully.

Taxi

As a foreigner you are probably afraid to be cheated by the taxi driver, and I would say, it's not totally unfounded.

So asking the taxi driver about the price keep in mind that the maximum cost of taxi to the city centre lies within a range of 50 PLN depending where exactly you go (It can be cheaper, it can be more expensive, but definfitely won't cost 100 PLN). I you intend to pay with a credit card always ask the taxi driver beforhand - not every taxi in Poland accepts card payments.

There is no train connection to the airport.

2. Flights within Poland

From what I hear from friends, you can often get affordable tickets to travel from Wrocław to other Polish cities.

E.g. to get to Gdańsk it takes 5-6 hours journey by car or at least 6-7 hours journey by train. The cost of train ticket (TLK category which is no luxury) is around 60 PLN for the second class. (I'm not able to give you exact price, as it might be cheaper, or more expensive depending how early you buy). So you see how enourmous save of time flying is.

From Wrocław you can get to Gdańsk, Warszawa, Warszawa Modlin airport (which is not in Warsaw but about 40 kilometres from the city centre), and Lublin.

Ryanair flies Wrocław-Gdańsk and Wrocław-Warszawa Modlin.
Eurolot goes to Lublin and Gdańsk.
LOT to Warsaw (but LOT is no cheap line, so it might be a few time smore expensive than a bus, or a train). However, connection city centre-airport is very good.

3. Consider alternative airports

Important thing to know about getting to Wrocław by plane is the following: if you cannot find a good flight connection to/from Wrocław, consider other airports nearby.

Especially Kraków, as it is the second biggest airport in Poland.
Katowice is also an option - it's a bigger airport than Wrocław too (and the closest one to Wrocław).

Both are perfectly connected by car - you just take the motorway and reach them in about 2 hours (Katowice airport) or 2,5 hours (Kraków airport).

If you do not want to rent a car, you can easily get to Kraków by bus.The journey to the city centre takes about 3, up to 3,5 hours. From the city centre you can go to the airport by bus (normally also by train, but now it doesn't operate due to construction works at the airport).
