Wrocław old school bakeries in Śródmieście

In Poland you can still buy great bread (as long as you do not buy in a hypermarket). So if you are either a big fan of bread or come from a country where bread doesn't look like the one in Europe, I encourage you to visit a good Polish bakery.

In the old school Śródmieście district you will find two very nice, traditional bakeries!

The first one is a bakery at Plac Bema, in front of the tram stop. (Some people claim it's the best bakery in Wrocław. As I haven't been to all, I can neither confirm nor deny it.) The queue in front of it is enormous, so you must be patient. I'm not, so I go there only at the end of the day, before closing time.
They have awesome chleb żytni (rye bread). (I love it with honey, or Brie/Camembert). But their 'starndard' bread is also excellent. There is something really slow-food-ish about the place, e.g. during all the long weekends they simply close the bakery for a few days, or they won't sell you half of the loaf if the bread, when it's too hot to cut.

Another good bakery is Żelezny bakery in a tiny Barlickiego street (that you probably do not know, it's a side street from Nowowiejska). I go there on Saturday mornings. The queue is smaller than at Bema square! They are famous for so called bliźniak (twin) bread with czarnuszka (nigella as Wikipedia told me). As I hate caraway, dill, parsley et consortes, I personally discourage you from buying the czarnuszka version. I can recommend bliźniak without czarnuszka, rogalik, and chałka. Again, it's a this kind of a traditional place, where the shopkeepers know some of the customers.

Rogal or rogalik is typical Polish. In dictionaries you will sometimes find the translation 'croissant' but it has nothing to do with croissant. Basically it's a bułka in a crescent shape. The most typical one is with poppy seeds, but there are also sweet versions.
Chałka is a sweet bun, with a special 'braided' decoration. It stems from the Jewish cuisine. To serve it with butter is enough to have a delicious breakfast!

  1. Uwielbiam Twojego bloga! Znalazłam go jakiś czas temu przez przypadek, ale właśnie się wprowadziłam do Wrocławia, więc myślę, że będę stale tu zaglądać i przeczytam go od deski do deski. I wtedy oczywiście ruszę na podbój miasta ;)

    Pozdrawiam,
    Joanna
