When you come to a foreign country there is always something about the railway and long-distance bus service that you learn too late (e.g. after missing the train). So here you will find a few tips how to get around before you arrive in the main station.
1. Railway
- The main railway station in Wrocław is called Wrocław Główny
- The closest bus and tram stop is called "Dworzec Główny [abbreviated to Gł.] PKP". Here's the
list of lines and map of this bus/tram stop
- Poland-wide advise: buy train tickets earlier, not just before the train leaves. (It's my life-long experience!) The ticket-selling service in Polish railway stations is very inefficient and it can get stressful 5 minutes before the train's departure. Best solution is buy tickets via Internet: there are two separate portals for different train categories: TLK and InterCity and all types of Regio and InterRegio. You can buy tickets on the train but there is an extra charge for that*.
- There is a nasty thing in Wrocław railway station: so called "sektory" (sectors). Which means that from time to time trains in two opposite directions can go from the same track. There will be information displayed that e.g. train to Katowice is going from sector A and B and the train to Dresden from C and D but anyway be careful when in hurry. It is confusing for Polish people as well! If you see two trains on the track and have doubts, ask, not to risk going west if you were heading east.
-By the by, the main train station is a very nice 19th century building, (one of the most beautiful railway stations in Poland, I daresay) so it's worth visiting, even if you do not plan a journey.
2. Bus
Main long-distance buses/coaches station is situated next to the main railway station in Sucha street. If you will go to Kraków, or Warsaw, or abroad by bus, you will go from there.
- The closest bus and tram stop is called "Dworzec Autobusowy". Here's again the
list of lines and map of this stop. (But you can get off at Dworzec Główny PKP south of the railway station as well, because they are close to each other)
- There are a lot of private companies operating there, you can look for the timetables in http://www.e-podroznik.pl/. If you go with very popular PolskiBus it leaves from Dworzec Autobusowy.
If you plan to travel a lot, you will find my earlier post How to get to Wrocław? useful. And my other post
Public transport in Wrocław helps you get to and from train/bus station.
*If I were to give all the tips about Polish railway a separate article would be necessary...
